課程概述

The course will explore text
and context of British
literature during Queen
Victoria’s long reign.
While this class can hardly
do justice to the nineteenth
century novel, the dominant
literary expression of the
time, we will study some
representative works,
particularly in the fast
changing social reality from
which they emerged. The
sessions are organized into
three generic categories to
highlight the importance of
both nonfictional and
fictional prose in this
period. The success of this
course depends largely on
students’ collaboration in
synthesizing the knowledge
of text and context.

課程目標
Toward the end of the class,
students are expected to
reach a comprehensive
understanding of Victorian
culture, which informs much
of contemporary modernity.
課程要求
Requirements:
1. Reading and Discussion:
Please finish assigned
readings before class. You
are encouraged to bring any
contemporary
adaptation/reuse of the
Victorian text to our
attention in class.
2. Attendance and
participation
Anyone who misses the class
more than three times will
not pass this course. You
are encouraged to avoid
chronic lateness. Anyone who
misses more than one hour of
the class will be counted as
absent half a time.
Participate in the workshops
and class discussions
collaboratively.
3. Tests and Assignments:
You are responsible for
being in time for tests. No
makeup exams will be given
unless under extreme
circumstances. Assignments
are expected to be given on
the due day.
4. Presentation:
We will have at least one
student oral presentation in
each literature reading
session (excluding midterm
days). This presentation can
focus on any aspect of the
text and/or relevant
cultural contexts. The
purpose of the presentation
is to initiate a
collaborative discussion
among your classmates and
you are encouraged to
provide questions for the
class. The performance will
be mainly about how well you
start the discussion, not
how well you interpret a
text.
